Wilderness First Aid (WFA)

This 16‐hour (two day) course provides entry‐level training for outdoor enthusiasts who want to prepare themselves and their friends for outdoor trips. SOLO’s Wilderness First Aid course covers topics ranging from preparation and prevention to assessment and treatment of backcountry injuries. All of our instructors have extensive outdoor experience. They have been selected not only for their expertise in emergency medicine and rescue, but also for their teaching abilities. WFA is a two‐year certification that does not include CPR. American Heart Association (AHA) HeartSaver CPR is an optional extra that can be taken on the evening of day one. Taking a WFA class can also re‐certify an expired WFR or AWFA qualification.

Advanced Wilderness First Aid (AWFA)

The Advanced Wilderness First Aid course provides in‐depth information and practical backcountry first aid skills ranging from medical and environmental emergencies to improvising litters and litter carrying techniques. A large emphasis on leadership combined with plenty of hands‐on practice and coaching from our team of experienced leaders make this intensive, four‐day, 32‐hour course a must have for the outdoor enthusiast. AHA HeartSaver CPR is included in this course.

Wilderness First Responder (WFR)

SOLO’s Wilderness First Responder course is the recognized industry standard for those who work as backcountry trip leaders, camp counselors and students in outdoor recreation programs. The 72‐hour (8 or 9 days) curriculum includes standards for urban and extended‐care situations. WFR offers a comprehensive and in‐depth look at the standards and skills of dealing with:

• Response and assessment
• Musculo‐skeletal injuries
• Environmental emergencies
• Survival skills
• Soft tissue injuries
• Management of traumatic injuries
• Medical emergencies

Emphasis is placed on leadership, prevention and decision‐making. This course is designed specifically to provide you with the tools to make critical medical and evacuation decisions in remote locations. Half of your time will be spent completing practical skills, case studies and scenarios designed to challenge your decision‐making abilities. AHA HeartSaver CPR is included in this course.

AWFA to Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Upgrade

Students who have completed the AWFA class within one year can upgrade their qualification to the industry standard for outdoor professionals, WFR. The Advanced Wilderness First Aid to Wilderness First Responder five‐day course takes the AWFA and focuses in more detail on long‐term care and leadership in the wilderness. This `bridge’ course offers the opportunity to acquire more in‐depth information on trauma and medical injuries seen in the backcountry. A strong focus is put on scenarios to give students many opportunities to practice their skills and get feedback from instructors and fellow classmates. The certification is a must‐have for trip leaders and outdoor professionals and is good for three years. CPR is an optional extra.

American Canoe Association Swift Water Rescue

Swiftwater Rescue (SWR) at SOLO is a two-day, 16-hr class which teaches recognition and avoidance of common river hazards. Developed by the American Canoe Association (ACA), this class focuses on prevention and teaches students to execute rescues using a range of techniques. Emphasis is placed on personal safety and all students are encouraged but not required to participate in each individual course module.

Skills commonly taught in this class include, self-rescue, strainer avoidance, rescue vest applications, boat entrapments, use of mechanical systems and more. Students have the opportunity to practice SWR skills individually as well as work in groups as a member of a rescue team. The class is designed to improve participants rescue skills as well as facilitate a greater overall level of awareness on the river.

Requirements: Class II river running ability (preferred)

Gear: PFD, helmet,(both are available for loan), river shoes (no crocks), clothing suitable for extended submersion in cold water, whistle, throw rope, 15+ ft one inch tubular nylon webbing, two prusik loops, and two locking carabiners. All equipment can be purchased from our store during class.

Wilderness Module for Medical Professionals

SOLO Southeast’s Wilderness Module is a five‐day program that upgrades current street first responders to the WFR level, current EMTs to the Wilderness EMT (WEMT) level and medical professionals (doctors, nurses, PAs, paramedics) to WEMT level. This class is fast‐paced and highly recommended for medical professionals who already have an advanced knowledge of patient care but want a better understanding of wilderness protocols and procedures that are significantly different from those in the emergency room. It focuses on emergency care when separated from definitive care by distance, time or circumstance. The module covers subjects such as: Principles of Long‐Term Patient Care, Wilderness Patient Assessment System, Environmental Emergencies like frostbite, hypothermia, non‐freezing cold‐related injuries, heat stroke, heat exhaustion and dehydration, North American Bites and Stings, Severe Weather such as lightning and avalanche, Baro‐Trauma, Marine Bites and Stings, Case Histories and Mock Rescues. Participants will take a written and practical wilderness exam. This course typically counts for 40 hours of continuing education for National Registry EMTs.

Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (WEMT)

The EMT course consists of the standard DOT EMT curriculum integrated into an intensive three-week training program. This intensive class includes classroom sessions during the day and practical skills labs in the evening. During weekends, we review clinical skills and you will participate in two five-hour clinicals at a local EMS service, emergency department or walk-in clinic. American Heart Association (AHA) CPR for the healthcare provider is included.

This class gives you all the skills you need to take your state registered EMT exam. Training as an EMT will help prepare you for a future career in Emergency Medical Services, the military or law enforcement, and is recommended for expedition and wilderness guides. We use experienced professionals from the industry to teach our classes and emphasis hands-on skills with a strong understanding of body systems and patient care.

Wilderness Survival Skills (WSS)

NOC's SOLO Wilderness Medicine instructors are teaming up to offer this one-time course on Wilderness Survival Skills in April 2010. Whether you're planning to audition for an episode of Survivor or just want to test your wilderness aptitude, this workshop is bound to be an exciting weekend! As with all NOC courses, we'll spend some time in the classroom, but the bulk of our learning will take place in scenarios in the Nantahala National Forest surrounding NOC.
